Arcadia, New York

Arcadia is a town located in Wayne County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 14,889.

The Town of Arcadia was formed from the Town of Lyons in 1825. Arcadia is on the south border of the county.

Geography

The Erie Canal passes across the town.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 135.0 km² (52.1 mi²). 134.8 km² (52.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.19% water.

The terrain contains many drumlins from past glaciation.

The south town line is the border of Ontario County, New York.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 14,889 people, 5,776 households, and 3,910 families residing in the town. The population density is 110.5/km² (286.1/mi²). There are 6,115 housing units at an average density of 45.4/km² (117.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 91.44% White, 3.84% African American, 0.30% Native American, 0.44% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 2.11% from other races, and 1.83% from two or more races. 5.53% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 5,776 households out of which 33.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.0% are married couples living together, 13.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.3% are non-families. 26.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 2.98.

In the town the population is spread out with 26.1% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 27.8% from 25 to 44, 23.5% from 45 to 64, and 15.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 91.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.3 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $37,755, and the median income for a family is $46,239. Males have a median income of $32,602 versus $24,419 for females. The per capita income for the town is $18,403. 12.9% of the population and 8.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 19.3% of those under the age of 18 and 10.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

  • Brantling Hill -- A large drumlin in the northeast corner of the town. It is the location of ski slope.
  • Fairville -- A hamlet near the town's center on Route 233.
  • Fairville Station -- A hamlet northeast of Newark on Route 233.
  • Hydesville -- A hamlet north of Newark village on Route 228. The village is called the birthplace of modern Spiritualism, due to the efforts of natives Kate and Margaret Fox
  • Marbletown -- A hamlet on Route 336 near the south town line.
  • Minsteed -- A location in the northwest corner of the town.
  • Mud Mills -- A hamlet northeast of Newark on Route 234.
  • Newark -- The village of Newark, located on the Erie Canal.
  • Stebbins Corner -- A location west of Hydesville on Route 225.
  • Zurich -- A location in the northeast corner of the town on Route 237. Nearby Zurich bog is the lowest point in the town.
