Oneida is a city located in Madison County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 10,987. The Oneida Tribe is a member of the Iroquois Confederation that allied itself with the Americans in the American Revolution.

Geography
Oneida is located at 43°5'6" North, 75°39'12" West (43.084961, -75.653375)Template:GR. The city is located between Syracuse and Utica.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 57.2 km² (22.1 mi²). 57.1 km² (22.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.23% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 10,987 people, 4,430 households, and 2,724 families residing in the city. The population density is 192.6/km² (498.7/mi²). There are 4,672 housing units at an average density of 81.9/km² (212.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 96.29% White, 0.80% African American, 1.39% Native American, 0.46% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.18% from other races, and 0.86% from two or more races. 0.84% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 4,430 households out of which 32.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.3% are married couples living together, 11.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.5% are non-families. 32.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.40 and the average family size is 3.03.
In the city the population is spread out with 25.1% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 29.9% from 25 to 44, 22.1% from 45 to 64, and 15.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 92.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $35,365, and the median income for a family is $45,242. Males have a median income of $31,244 versus $23,846 for females. The per capita income for the city is $18,966. 12.5% of the population and 8.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 11.5% of those under the age of 18 and 10.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
Facts about Oneida
Oneida is the site of the former Oneida Community, a social and religious commune the flourished during the third quarter of the 19th Century. The Mansion House, a national historic monument, is the principal building of the Oneida Community.
