Tusten, New York

Tusten is a town located in Sullivan County in the U.S. state of New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,415. The name is derived from Benjamin Tusten, a military leader killed at the Battle of Minnesink.
The Town of Tusten is located in southwestern part of the county.

History
The town was previously part of the Towns of Mamakating and Lumberland in 1853. Benjamin Homans was the first settler, setting himself up by Narrowsburg.
Geography
The west town line, delineated by the Delaware River, is the border of Pennsylvania.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 126.4 km² (48.8 mi²). 122.4 km² (47.3 mi²) of it is land and 4.0 km² (1.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.18% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,415 people, 583 households, and 367 families residing in the town. The population density is 11.6/km² (29.9/mi²). There are 1,008 housing units at an average density of 8.2/km² (21.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 89.12% White, 6.93% African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.92% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.13% from other races, and 1.77% from two or more races. 3.60% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 583 households out of which 26.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.6% are married couples living together, 8.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.0% are non-families. 32.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.30 and the average family size is 2.89.
In the town the population is spread out with 22.3% under the age of 18, 4.2% from 18 to 24, 24.1% from 25 to 44, 28.3% from 45 to 64, and 21.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 103.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 105.8 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $38,824, and the median income for a family is $46,250. Males have a median income of $35,125 versus $25,938 for females. The per capita income for the town is $19,413. 9.2% of the population and 6.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 8.9% of those under the age of 18 and 4.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

- Beaver Brook Corners (or Beaver Brook) -- A hamlet in the eastern part of the town.
- Feagles Lake -- A small lake east of Narrowsburg.
- Hunts Corners -- A hamlet east of Narrowsburg on Route 52.
- Lava -- A hamlet east of Narrowsburg on Route 52.
- New Weiden -- A hamlet east of Narrowsburg.
- Smith Switch -- A location in the northwest corner of the town by the Delaware River and on Route 97.
- Ten Mile River -- A small river and the site of a large summer camp maintained by the Boy Scouts of America, located near New Weiden.
- Tusten -- The hamlet of Tusten in the southwest part of the town on Route 97.
