Stearns County is a county located in the state of Minnesota. As of 2000, the population is 133,166. Its county seat is St. Cloud6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,600 km² (1,390 mi²). 3,482 km² (1,345 mi²) of it is land and 118 km² (45 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.27% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 133,166 people, 47,604 households, and 32,132 families residing in the county. The population density is 38/km² (99/mi²). There are 50,291 housing units at an average density of 14/km² (37/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 95.99% White, 0.83% Black or African American, 0.26% Native American, 1.58% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.47% from other races, and 0.82% from two or more races. 1.37% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 47,604 households out of which 35.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.30% are married couples living together, 7.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.50% are non-families. 23.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.64 and the average family size is 3.15.

In the county the population is spread out with 25.70% under the age of 18, 16.10% from 18 to 24, 28.00% from 25 to 44, 19.10% from 45 to 64, and 11.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 101.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $42,426, and the median income for a family is $51,553. Males have a median income of $34,268 versus $23,393 for females. The per capita income for the county is $19,211. 8.70% of the population and 4.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.70% of those under the age of 18 and 8.60% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
