Minnetonka is a city located in Hennepin County, Minnesota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 51,301.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 73.1 km² (28.2 mi²). 70.3 km² (27.1 mi²) of it is land and 2.8 km² (1.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.83% water. Part of the city of Minnetonka includes the Eastern tip of Lake Minnetonka, one of the largest lakes in Minnesota. The outlet of Lake Minnetonka is Minnehaha Creek, which winds through South Minneapolis before ending at a spectacular urban waterfall, Minnehaha Falls, and flowing into the Mississippi River.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 51,301 people, 21,393 households, and 14,097 families residing in the city. The population density is 729.8/km² (1,890.0/mi²). There are 22,228 housing units at an average density of 316.2/km² (818.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 94.40% White, 1.50% African American, 0.20% Native American, 2.29% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.57% from other races, and 1.03% from two or more races. 1.28% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 21,393 households out of which 29.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.6% are married couples living together, 6.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.1% are non-families. 27.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.37 and the average family size is 2.92.
In the city the population is spread out with 23.1% under the age of 18, 6.0% from 18 to 24, 28.5% from 25 to 44, 28.4% from 45 to 64, and 14.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 91.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $69,979, and the median income for a family is $85,437. Males have a median income of $57,439 versus $38,605 for females. The per capita income for the city is $40,410. 2.6% of the population and 1.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.3% of those under the age of 18 and 4.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
