Jefferson County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of 2000, the population is 84,278. The county seat is Pine Bluff. Jefferson County was formed on November 2, 1829 and named for Thomas Jefferson, President of the United States.

Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,366 km² (914 mi²). 2,292 km² (885 mi²) of it is land and 75 km² (29 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.16% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 84,278 people, 30,555 households, and 21,510 families residing in the county. The population density is 37/km² (95/mi²). There are 34,350 housing units at an average density of 15/km² (39/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 48.46% White, 49.58% Black or African American, 0.24% Native American, 0.66% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.26% from other races, and 0.76% from two or more races. 0.96% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 30,555 households out of which 33.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.40% are married couples living together, 18.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.60% are non-families. 26.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.59 and the average family size is 3.13.
In the county the population is spread out with 26.30% under the age of 18, 10.80% from 18 to 24, 27.80% from 25 to 44, 22.10% from 45 to 64, and 12.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 95.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.40 males.
