Montgomery County is a county located in the state of Indiana. As of 2000, the population is 37,629. It was named in honor of Richard Montgomery, an American Revolutionary War general killed in 1775 while attempting to capture Quebec City, Canada. The county's county seat is Crawfordsville, Indiana6.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,309 km² (505 mi²). 1,307 km² (505 mi²) of it is land and 2 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.16% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 37,629 people, 14,595 households, and 10,245 families residing in the county. The population density is 29/km² (75/mi²). There are 15,678 housing units at an average density of 12/km² (31/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.77% White, 0.77% Black or African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.42% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.10% from other races, and 0.71% from two or more races. 1.62% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 14,595 households out of which 33.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.60% are married couples living together, 8.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.80% are non-families. 25.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 2.97.
