King County, Texas

King County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 356. Its county seat is Guthrie6. King County has the distinction of being the third smallest county (by population) in the United States, following Loving County, Texas and Kalawao County, Hawaii. The county was named for William Philip King, who died at the Alamo.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,366 km² (913 mi²). 2,363 km² (912 mi²) of it is land and 3 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.11% water.

Economy

The primary industries are raising beef cattle (since the late 1800s), and oil production (since 1943). Corn and cotton are the leading planted farm crops.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 356 people, 108 households, and 88 families residing in the county. The population density is 0.15/km² (0.39/mi²). There are 174 housing units at an average density of 0.07/km² (0.19/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 94.10% White, 0.00% Black or African American, 1.12% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 3.09% from other races, and 1.69% from two or more races. 9.55% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 108 households out of which 41.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 79.60% are married couples living together, 1.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 17.60% are non-families. 16.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 1.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.77 and the average family size is 3.12.

In the county, the population is spread out with 33.70% under the age of 18, 3.70% from 18 to 24, 29.50% from 25 to 44, 22.80% from 45 to 64, and 10.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 95.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 100.00 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $35,625, and the median income for a family is $36,875. Males have a median income of $21,389 versus $30,179 for females. The per capita income for the county is $12,321. 20.70% of the population and 17.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 23.00% are under the age of 18 and 31.60% are 65 or older.
