Henderson County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 73,277. Its county seat is Athens6. This county is part of the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex, and is named in honor of James Pinckney Henderson, the first governor of Texas after it became part of the United States.

Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,458 km² (949 mi²). 2,264 km² (874 mi²) of it is land and 194 km² (75 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 7.88% water.

Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 73,277 people, 28,804 households, and 20,969 families residing in the county. The population density is 32/km² (84/mi²). There are 35,935 housing units at an average density of 16/km² (41/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 88.50% White, 6.61% Black or African American, 0.54% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 2.72% from other races, and 1.30% from two or more races. 6.92% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 28,804 households out of which 29.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.70% are married couples living together, 10.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.20% are non-families. 23.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 2.94.
In the county, the population is spread out with 24.40% under the age of 18, 7.60% from 18 to 24, 25.00% from 25 to 44, 24.80% from 45 to 64, and 18.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 96.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.90 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $32,533, and the median income for a family is $38,255. Males have a median income of $31,847 versus $21,650 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,772. 15.10% of the population and 11.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 18.60% of those under the age of 18 and 11.80% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
