Titus County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 28,118. Its county seat is Mount Pleasant6. The county is named for Andrew Jackson Titus, an early settler.

Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,103 km² (426 mi²). 1,063 km² (411 mi²) of it is land and 39 km² (15 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.56% water.

Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 28,118 people, 9,552 households, and 7,154 families residing in the county. The population density is 26/km² (68/mi²). There are 10,675 housing units at an average density of 10/km² (26/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 70.15% White, 10.70% Black or African American, 0.58% Native American, 0.43% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 16.42% from other races, and 1.71% from two or more races. 28.31% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 9,552 households out of which 39.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.00% are married couples living together, 11.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.10% are non-families. 22.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.88 and the average family size is 3.36.
In the county, the population is spread out with 30.30% under the age of 18, 9.80% from 18 to 24, 28.00% from 25 to 44, 19.50% from 45 to 64, and 12.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 97.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.00 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $32,452, and the median income for a family is $37,390. Males have a median income of $26,466 versus $18,238 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,501. 18.50% of the population and 14.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 25.10% of those under the age of 18 and 14.10% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
