Yakima County is a county located in the state of Washington. As of 2000, the population is 222,581. The county seat is at Yakima. It is named after the Yakama tribe of Native Americans.

Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 11,167 km² (4,312 mi²). 11,127 km² (4,296 mi²) of it is land and 40 km² (15 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.36% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 222,581 people, 73,993 households, and 54,606 families residing in the county. The population density is 20/km² (52/mi²). There are 79,174 housing units at an average density of 7/km² (18/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 65.60% White, 0.97% Black or African American, 4.48% Native American, 0.95% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 24.43% from other races, and 3.48% from two or more races. 35.90% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 73,993 households out of which 39.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.80% are married couples living together, 12.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.20% are non-families. 21.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.96 and the average family size is 3.44.
In the county, the population is spread out with 31.80% under the age of 18, 9.80% from 18 to 24, 27.50% from 25 to 44, 19.70% from 45 to 64, and 11.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 99.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.10 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $34,828, and the median income for a family is $39,746. Males have a median income of $31,620 versus $24,541 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,606. 19.70% of the population and 14.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 27.20% of those under the age of 18 and 11.30% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
