Scott County is a county located in the state of Iowa. As of 2000, the population is 158,668. Its county seat is Davenport, Iowa6.

Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,213 km² (468 mi²). 1,186 km² (458 mi²) of it is land and 27 km² (10 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.19% water.

History
The first American settlement in the area now known as Scott County was Valley City (now known as Pleasant Valley) in 1833. Other early towns included Davenport (now the county seat and largest city) and Rockingham (which ceased to exist in 1847). The area was fully surveyed in 1837, and the county was established by the Wisconsin legislature in that same year. Scott County is named for General Winfield Scott, who was the presiding officer at the signing of the peace treaty ending the Black Hawk War. By 1900 the population of the county was 51,500, and by 1950 it was over 100,000. Scott County now comprises part of the Quad City region, which includes the cities of Davenport and Bettendorf (in Iowa) and Rock Island and Moline (in Illinois).
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 158,668 people, 62,334 households, and 41,888 families residing in the county. The population density is 134/km² (346/mi²). There are 65,649 housing units at an average density of 55/km² (143/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 88.54% White, 6.11% Black or African American, 0.32% Native American, 1.58% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 1.64% from other races, and 1.80% from two or more races. 4.06% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 62,334 households out of which 33.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.30% are married couples living together, 11.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.80% are non-families. 26.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 3.04.
In the county the population is spread out with 26.50% under the age of 18, 9.30% from 18 to 24, 29.40% from 25 to 44, 23.00% from 45 to 64, and 11.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 95.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.50 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $42,701, and the median income for a family is $52,045. Males have a median income of $38,985 versus $25,456 for females. The per capita income for the county is $21,310. 10.50% of the population and 7.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 13.70% of those under the age of 18 and 5.80% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
