Marion is a city located in Linn County, Iowa. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 26,294. The city is part of the Cedar Rapids metro area.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 31.1 km² (12.0 mi²). 31.1 km² (12.0 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 26,294 people, 10,458 households, and 7,174 families residing in the city. The population density is 846.0/km² (2,192.1/mi²). There are 10,968 housing units at an average density of 352.9/km² (914.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 97.01% White, 0.60% African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.94% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.40% from other races, and 0.84% from two or more races. 1.10% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 10,458 households out of which 34.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.1% are married couples living together, 8.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.4% are non-families. 26.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.47 and the average family size is 3.00.

In the city the population is spread out with 26.4% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 31.9% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 94.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $48,591, and the median income for a family is $59,110. Males have a median income of $40,766 versus $26,241 for females. The per capita income for the city is $23,158. 5.2% of the population and 3.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.2% of those under the age of 18 and 5.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
