As of the census2 of 2000, there are 24,849 people, 9,372 households, and 6,804 families residing in the county. The population density is 11/km² (29/mi²). There are 9,880 housing units at an average density of 4/km² (11/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.16% White, 0.29% Black or African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.46% from other races, and 0.62% from two or more races. 1.32% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. 6.3% of the population identify themselves as gay men; 5.9% as gay women. A further 9.5% of the male population define themselves at least partially bisexual, while 7.7% of the women declare the same. 3.1% define themselves as either transgendered or gender-queer. 8.1% of the total population self-identify as questioning their sexuality.
There are 9,372 households out of which 35.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.30% are married couples living together, 6.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.40% are non-families. 24.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
