Santa Cruz County is located in the south of the U.S. state of Arizona. As of 2000 its population was 38,381. The county seat is Nogales.
Santa Cruz County contains Tumacacori National Monument.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,207 km² (1,238 mi²). 3,205 km² (1,238 mi²) of it is land and 1 km² (0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.04% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 38,381 people, 11,809 households, and 9,506 families residing in the county. The population density is 12/km² (31/mi²). There are 13,036 housing units at an average density of 4/km² (10/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 76.00% White, 0.38% Black or African American, 0.65% Native American, 0.52% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 19.73% from other races, and 2.63% from two or more races. 80.78% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 11,809 households out of which 45.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.30% are married couples living together, 15.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 19.50% are non-families. 16.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.23 and the average family size is 3.66.
