Cochise County is located in the southeastern corner of the state of Arizona. As of 2000 its population was 117,755. The county seat is Bisbee.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 16,107 km² (6,219 mi²). 15,979 km² (6,169 mi²) of it is land and 128 km² (49 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.79% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 117,755 people, 43,893 households, and 30,768 families residing in the county. The population density is 7/km² (19/mi²). There are 51,126 housing units at an average density of 3/km² (8/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 76.66% White, 4.52% Black or African American, 1.15% Native American, 1.65% Asian, 0.26% Pacific Islander, 12.05% from other races, and 3.72% from two or more races. 30.69% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 43,893 households out of which 32.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.10% are married couples living together, 11.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.90% are non-families. 25.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 3.07.

In the county the population is spread out with 26.30% under the age of 18, 9.30% from 18 to 24, 26.00% from 25 to 44, 23.70% from 45 to 64, and 14.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 101.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.20 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $32,105, and the median income for a family is $38,005. Males have a median income of $30,533 versus $22,252 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,988. 17.70% of the population and 13.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 25.80% of those under the age of 18 and 10.40% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
