San Benito, Texas

San Benito is a city located in Cameron County, Texas. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 23,444.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 29.0 km² (11.2 mi²). 28.5 km² (11.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.87% water. It should be noted that San Benito is also known as "The Rasaca City", due to it's many rasacas (a former tributary of the Rio Grande, which has been cut off for irrigation purposes). Also it is home to Dick Welch Park.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 23,444 people, 7,065 households, and 5,715 families residing in the city. The population density is 822.1/km² (2,130.2/mi²). There are 9,120 housing units at an average density of 319.8/km² (828.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 76.16% White, 0.32% African American, 0.41% Native American, 0.25% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 20.48% from other races, and 2.38% from two or more races. 86.93% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 7,065 households out of which 41.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.6% are married couples living together, 19.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 19.1% are non-families. 16.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.30 and the average family size is 3.72.

In the city the population is spread out with 33.3% under the age of 18, 10.5% from 18 to 24, 24.8% from 25 to 44, 17.8% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 30 years. For every 100 females there are 90.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.1 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $24,027, and the median income for a family is $26,415. Males have a median income of $22,097 versus $18,512 for females. The per capita income for the city is $10,317. 32.7% of the population and 28.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 42.1% of those under the age of 18 and 22.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
