Riggins, Idaho

Riggins, a city located in Idaho County, Idaho, is nestled deep in a canyon at the confluence of the Salmon River and the Little Salmon River in west Central Idaho. It is the only town in Idaho County not located in the county's northwest corner. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 410.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.8 km² (0.3 mi²). 0.8 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 410 people, 204 households, and 111 families residing in the city. The population density is 527.7/km² (1,361.3/mi²). There are 253 housing units at an average density of 325.6/km² (840.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 98.29% White, 0.00% African American, 0.49% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.24% from other races, and 0.98% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 204 households out of which 15.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.1% are married couples living together, 6.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 45.1% are non-families. 39.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 23.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.01 and the average family size is 2.64.
In the city the population is spread out with 17.6% under the age of 18, 3.2% from 18 to 24, 18.5% from 25 to 44, 33.2% from 45 to 64, and 27.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 52 years. For every 100 females there are 100.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $20,972, and the median income for a family is $30,000. Males have a median income of $27,361 versus $16,250 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,330. 25.3% of the population and 19.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 50.0% of those under the age of 18 and 9.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Riggins is a hub for outdoor adventures in North Central Idaho. Rafting, kayaking, fishing, and hunting are just some of the ways to enjoy yourself. Campgrounds surround the area, allowing you to view the scenery and wildlife at your leisure. You can pan for gold in the river gravel. Guides and outfitters can help you have the vacation of a lifetime.
The Riggins Rodeo in early May can be viewed from the grandstands or from the hillside overlooking the arena.
Visit the nearby Rapid River Fish Hatchery to see Salmon climbing upstream from May to August.
