Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 4,972 km² (1,920 mi²). 4,501 km² (1,738 mi²) of it is land and 471 km² (182 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 9.48% water.

The racial makeup of the county is 96.58% White, 0.11% Black or African American, 0.87% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.42% from other races, and 1.70% from two or more races. 1.64% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 14,693 households out of which 30.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.60% are married couples living together, 7.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.10% are non-families. 24.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 2.94.
