Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 9,988 km² (3,856 mi²). 9,986 km² (3,856 mi²) of it is land and 2 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.02% water.

Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 7,304 people, 2,530 households, and 1,864 families residing in the county. The population density is 1/km² (2/mi²). There are 3,299 housing units at an average density of 0/km² (1/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 84.95% White, 0.27% Black or African American, 0.27% Native American, 0.08% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 13.47% from other races, and 0.93% from two or more races. 84.36% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,530 households out of which 40.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.50% are married couples living together, 13.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.30% are non-families. 24.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.85 and the average family size is 3.43.
In the county, the population is spread out with 32.70% under the age of 18, 8.30% from 18 to 24, 24.90% from 25 to 44, 20.20% from 45 to 64, and 13.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 94.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.00 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $19,860, and the median income for a family is $22,314. Males have a median income of $23,218 versus $16,208 for females. The per capita income for the county is $9,558. 36.40% of the population and 32.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 43.40% of those under the age of 18 and 44.10% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
2004 Election
Presidio County is one of the few counties in Texas to give a majority of their votes to Senator John Kerry.
