Grand Prairie is a city located in Dallas, Tarrant, and Ellis counties. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 127,427.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 211.2 km² (81.5 mi²). 184.9 km² (71.4 mi²) of it is land and 26.3 km² (10.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 12.44% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 127,427 people, 43,791 households, and 32,317 families residing in the city. The population density is 689.1/km² (1,784.6/mi²). There are 46,425 housing units at an average density of 251.0/km² (650.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 61.97% White, 13.53% African American, 0.77% Native American, 4.42% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 15.90% from other races, and 3.34% from two or more races. 32.99% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 43,791 households out of which 41.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.9% are married couples living together, 13.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.2% are non-families. 20.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.90 and the average family size is 3.38.

In the city the population is spread out with 30.5% under the age of 18, 10.1% from 18 to 24, 34.1% from 25 to 44, 18.8% from 45 to 64, and 6.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 30 years. For every 100 females there are 98.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $46,816, and the median income for a family is $51,449. Males have a median income of $35,300 versus $28,184 for females. The per capita income for the city is $18,978. 11.1% of the population and 8.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.2% of those under the age of 18 and 10.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
