DeWitt County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 20,013. DeWitt is named for Green DeWitt, who founded an early colony in Texas.

Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,358 km2 (910 mi2). 2,355 km2 (909 mi2) of it is land and 3 km2 (1 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 0.14% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 20,013 people, 7,207 households, and 5,131 families residing in the county. The population density is 8/km2 (22/mi2). There are 8,756 housing units at an average density of 4/km2 (10/mi2). The racial makeup of the county is 76.42% White, 11.04% Black or African American, 0.54% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 10.01% from other races, and 1.75% from two or more races. 27.24% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 7,207 households out of which 31.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.10% are married couples living together, 11.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.80% are non-families. 26.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.53 and the average family size is 3.04.
In the county, the population is spread out with 23.80% under the age of 18, 7.00% from 18 to 24, 27.10% from 25 to 44, 23.30% from 45 to 64, and 18.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 105.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 105.20 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $28,714, and the median income for a family is $33,513. Males have a median income of $27,134 versus $18,370 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,780. 19.60% of the population and 15.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 25.50% of those under the age of 18 and 16.50% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
