Burleson County, Texas

Burleson County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 16,470. Its county seat is Caldwell6. Burleson is named for Edward Burleson, a general and statesman of the Texas Revolution.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,755 km² (678 mi²). 1,724 km² (666 mi²) of it is land and 32 km² (12 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.81% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 16,470 people, 6,363 households, and 4,574 families residing in the county. The population density is 10/km² (25/mi²). There are 8,197 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (12/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 74.07% White, 15.06% Black or African American, 0.50% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 8.25% from other races, and 1.92% from two or more races. 14.64% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,363 households out of which 31.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.40% are married couples living together, 11.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.10% are non-families. 24.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.57 and the average family size is 3.08.

In the county, the population is spread out with 26.90% under the age of 18, 8.00% from 18 to 24, 25.80% from 25 to 44, 23.20% from 45 to 64, and 16.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 94.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $33,026, and the median income for a family is $39,385. Males have a median income of $28,795 versus $20,146 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,616. 17.20% of the population and 13.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 22.90% of those under the age of 18 and 14.30% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
