A bootleg means it's a live album. Look from here (http://www.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=Live_At_Bonds&action=history) on the history of Live At Bonds by The Clash. - No-Fx

Wrong again. a bootleg means a pirated release or released unofficially, usually without the artist's permission. Many live albums are officially released (not bootlegs). Many bootlegs arn't live (eg, unofficially released studio sessions, etc). You still haven't explained what a 'bottleg' is though. quercus robur 22:03 22 May 2003 (UTC)

Hi: for the reason we are deleting all of Michael's edits regardless of their content, see User talk:Michael/ban. Regards, The Anome 15:16 6 Jun 2003 (UTC)

Actually noticed that page before... Seems to be a lot of mentions to it throughout the Wikipædia... كسيپ Cyp 15:21 6 Jun 2003 (UTC)

In case you didn't already know, I've created a group watchlist of sorts at Wikipedia:Favorite pages of banned users to help with tracking when Michael is vandalizing (and any future vandals like him). So feel free too use it, I have already found it helpful, and please add to it when he vandalizes more. Thanks. MB 22:11 6 Jun 2003 (UTC)

Congratulations, you have just been made a sysop! You have volunteered for boring housekeeping activities which normal users sadly cannot participate in. Sysops basically can't do anything: They cannot delete pages arbitarily (only obvious junk like "jklasdfl,öasdf JOSH IS GAY"), they cannot protect pages in an edit war they are involved in, they cannot ban signed in users. What they can do is delete junk as it appears, ban anonymous vandals, remove pages that have been listed on Votes for deletion for more than a week, protect pages when asked to by other members, and help keep the few protected pages there are, among them the precious Main Page, up to date.

Note that almost everything you can do can be undone, so don't be too worried about making mistakes. You will find more information at Wikipedia:Administrators, please take a look before experimenting with your new powers. Drop me a message if there are any questions or if you want to stop being a sysop (could it be?). Have fun! --Eloquence 13:39 20 Jun 2003 (UTC)

Thanks.
Hmmm, now I know how people managed to revert the Michæl articles faster than me sometimes... كسيپ Cyp 17:00 22 Jun 2003 (UTC)

Hi! Thanks for your endorsement! I really appreciate it! Poor Yorick 22:55 22 Jun 2003 (UTC)

Hi, I deleted the Apostrophe' article. It was by hardbanned user Michael, using his newest identity, Unbanned user. All contributions by hard banned users should be deleted on sight irrespective of content if only by them, or reverted to another user's work if another user worked on the article before them. As Michael was the originator of the article and so there was no earlier work to revert to I have deleted it. I am letting you know because you made some later changes, not realising it was Michael's work. Basically keep an eye out for music articles written by a new article. They are almost invariably in the form of details of an album. If you have any doubt, check the user's main page - if he is believed to be Michael someone will usually have placed a note to that effect on his page. If in doubt, check the vandalism page to see if he is listed there under that new name. Michael's edits are notoriously unreliable (he mixes fact with stuff he makes up) but even if they were 100% accurate, if by a hardbanned user they should be binned on sight. lol FearÉIREANN 18:42 5 Jul 2003 (UTC)

It was the first edit by that user, so I could only be 99.975412% sure it was him, so couldn't just go deleting. Therefore I just checked all of the article for "mistakes". Found a "b" instead of "B", which he corrected himself anyway, "Apostrophe" instead of "Apostrophe'", which didn't seem important, but I corrected, and a date that was the same as other sites said, but other sites also said the date wasn't completely certain, which I added to the article, don't know if that counts as a "mistake". At the time, there wasn't any talk page, or user page.

NP. :-) FearÉIREANN 22:37 5 Jul 2003 (UTC)

hello,

er, is it common practice in a discussion about banning someone that this "someone" vote is taken into account? Say, if decisions are taken upon full consensus only, and a blocking vote is enough to prevent the ban, if Lir says he is against him being banned, he then will not be ? :-) User:anthere

Actually, I just assumed RK would be against banning himself, not sure if I actually checked that he stated he was against the ban. Anyway, I'm pretty sure 1 vs 6/7 isn't quite enough for a ban, so probably doesn't matter whether RK's vote is taken into account. كسيپ Cyp 22:00 9 Jul 2003 (UTC)

Hi,

I seem to have sorted out the problem with these odd characters. They get broken with Lynx. And I must use Lynx. The solution seems to be to put Linux console in unicode mode and change Lynx options accordingly. I have been just experimenting with editing the offending parts of text with Lynx and now it looks OK. I sometimes forget to put the console into unicode mode and this might occasionally happen. Besides Lynx does not show the characters specially they are just "aa" letters before and after editing with Lynx, so it's harder to spot somthing is broken.

I am very willing to go over either New Imperialism version with you - I think its very important that somebody read these. This is an important part of history, a result of the industrial revolution and a cause of the World Wars. Pizza Puzzle

Unless someone else reads them first, and somehow changes all the sentences into mathematical statements, I think it's better if someone else looks at them instead. A spell checker could understand them better than I could. כסיף Cyp 08:21 24 Jul 2003 (UTC)

No problem, glad to be of help. כסיף Cyp 21:52 24 Jul 2003 (UTC)

my article is neither intended only for laymen, nor is it a summary -- mine is a FULL article Pizza Puzzle

Sorry, I just assumed it was supposed to be a summary, because it was shorter, and I read someone saying it was for laymen, guess it wasn't you that said that, then. כסיף Cyp 16:05 25 Jul 2003 (UTC)

Absolutely not, 172 argues that it is "for laymen" so that he can pretend to be an expert and argue that his version is somehow superior. READ HIS ARTICLE -- ALL OF IT I guarantee you, that regardless of your knowledge on the subject, it will become overwhelmingly apparent that this article is not wikified and needs an overhaul. The article is cut and pasted together, repetitive, POV, rambling, and frequently off topic. It is also way past the 32k limit. I also guarantee you that you will not be able to read his entire article - its an abomination that will give you a headache.

I can't read more than a few sentences of either article, before the words stop making sense. Even if the articles were perfect, I still couldn't make any sense of them. I don't even understand the title. I am not disagreeing with you, simply stating that I have no way of telling the difference between a masterpiece on the subject and computer-generated ramblings. כסיף Cyp 09:49 26 Jul 2003 (UTC)

My article is not a summary, it is a complete rewrite and it should replace the older article. Pizza Puzzle

The article was almost entirely written by one user, who has reacted with extreme passion to any attempts to change the article. He actually protected the page after I made a link from a word to an article! Pizza Puzzle

I may have found a few of his actions a little odd. כסיף Cyp 09:49 26 Jul 2003 (UTC)

I see you've changed your byline to Cyrillic characters. I'd like to inform you that the four Cyrillic characters you have there are all consonants. Remove the diacritic mark, and then you'll have something that may correspond to your actual nickname, depending on how you really pronounce it. -Smack 06:20, 5 Aug 2003 (UTC)

Thanks, I thought й was just supposed to be a shorter и. Was meant to be somewhere between Cip and Ceep, maybe a tiny bit of oo, but I'm not sure. Come to think of it, y is sometimes considered a consonant in English, too, although it's probably not normally pronounced like that... Will probably be changing to Κσυπ after a while. Ксип Cyp 08:24, 5 Aug 2003 (UTC)

Dear Cyp, i put that notice, because i started to post nonsense pages in Wikipedia:Deleted test to avoid filling Votes for Deletion with unecessary junk. Cheers, Muriel Gottrop 12:13, 6 Aug 2003 (UTC)

I know, think changing pages into redirects is easier than putting them on Votes for deletion, when they just contain only obvious junk like "jklasdfl,öasdf JOSH IS GAY". (In theory, isn't even nesseccary to list on the actual Deleted test page, as they appear under what links here (http://www.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=Special:Whatlinkshere&target=Wikipedia:Deleted_test), anyway.) Think the Deleted test page would be used more, if most of the people that would have used it hadn't turned sysop. (See Wikipedia:Requests for adminship.) Ксип Cyp 13:41, 6 Aug 2003 (UTC)

I'm not sure what a "nodeadkey" is... As for the rest of the keyboard, I can't upload it at the moment... Either I've been banned from uploading images (unlikely, since I still have sysop access), or there is some problem with images at the moment... Κσυπ Cyp 19:01, 26 Oct 2003 (UTC)

I would like to express a heartfelt thanks to: Κσυπ Cyp , Cimon Avaro on a pogostick, snoyes, Adam Bishop , Secretlondon, Hephaestos , 207.189.98.44 , Jamesday, Pakaran for nominating me and supporting me. It is encouraging to know that my efforts over the past 6 months have been appreciated. I prize your actions all the more knowing that many of you were not familiar with my work and had to do some research to decide whether to support me or not (because I limit my contributions to the 750 business/economics articles) . Thank you for the time, the effort, and the confidence.

There was a minority that did not support me because of my name. It seems that half have a problem because they read “shat” into it and half because of the word “god”. I find this amazing. The people that read “shat” into the character string had to ignore the commonly used word “hat” and pick out a word that has not be in common use for more than a century. My spell checker is currently telling me that the word dosn’t exist. One complainant insisted on converting “Monad” into “gonads” and “Excrescent” into “excrement”. Another saw “a dog eating a bone” as a sexual act. All I can say to these people is “Get professional help”.

As for changing my name, I have decided not to do that for two reasons. One is a philosophical reason. For an explanation, read The Crucible, particularly where John Proctor declares the importance of your name. The price of adminship is too high. The other reason is a practical one. I find it useful to use the same name on all my online activities. It is interesting that two universities and several commercial sites don’t have a problem with my name. Maybe it is not all that surprising since they are not inhabited by trolls trying to forward their cause.

Hope to see you around the business/economics pages in the future. mydogategodshat 03:02, 22 Nov 2003 (UTC)

Symmetry groups

The symmetry groups of the archimedean solids snub cube and snub dodecahedron are like the symmetry groups of the cube and the dodecahedron, just without the reflections. Would those groups be called "O" and "I"? (Instead of "Oh" and "Ih"?) Κσυπ Cyp   14:43, 22 Nov 2003 (UTC)

Yes - the symmetry group of the snub cube is "O", and the symmetry group of the snub dodecahedron is "I" - see octahedral group (http://mathworld.wolfram.com/OctahedralGroup.html) and icosahedral group (http://mathworld.wolfram.com/IcosahedralGroup.html) at MathWorld. -- Gandalf61 16:06, Nov 22, 2003 (UTC)

Hello. I notice that in Box-Muller transform you spelled Gaussian with a lower-case g. n!!

I can't make sense of that at the moment, maybe I'm too sleepy... As far as I can tell, <math>(2n-1)!! \ne 1\cdot 3 \cdot\dots\cdot(2n-1) = \frac{(2n)!}{n!2^n}<math>. Κσυπ Cyp   00:08, 4 Sep 2004 (UTC)

What you're not making sense of is the word where. The notation n!! does not mean the factorial of the factorial of n, but rather it means what it says it means after the word "where". That's what "where" means in this kind of mathematical jargon. The notation is obnoxious because n!! ought to mean the factorial of the factorial of n, but this and similar notation seem to have some currency. Michael Hardy 02:08, 5 Sep 2004 (UTC)

PS: I'd write

<math>1\cdot 3 \cdots(2n-1)<math>

rather than

<math>1\cdot 3 \cdot\dots\cdot(2n-1).<math>

polyhedron images

Hi Cyp,

I noticed that someone had started a listing Wikipedia:List of images of GFDL/GPL/... images. So I started a polyhedron listing Wikipedia:List of images/Math Diagrams/Polyhedra within the "Math diagrams" (should be "Mathematics", but whatever) to include those we created a while back. Then I did a 1,$s/.../.../ on the list from your homepage, a |sort and a manual tweak. If I have missed any, feel free to add.

I saw that somewhere a few days ago (thought there were 5 or so at the time, but can't remember), was thinking I should look at it to see how it's done, and see if there's a more efficient way... Just had an exam today, maybe I'll actually have time to look at it properly, soon. Doesn't it say "Warning: .pov files are not a recommended format, save anyway?", where you can click on "save anyway"? If the system doesn't accept .pov files any more, try changing it to a .npov file. I thought about the problem a few months ago (or whenever I finished the Catalan solids), but couldn't think of a "neat" way of doing it, "neat" meaning automatically finding the coordinates for all the solids without some kind of repeated approximation. No promises, but maybe I can take a look soon. Κσυπ Cyp   22:51, 3 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Ah yes, I forgot - Wikipedia prefers .npov to .pov 8-) I didn't see the "save anyway?" link, so either I have link blindness or it is no longer available. I will check next time. As for the J solids, I have mainly been doing what Johnson referred to as "Cut and Paste" solids, and doing them in batches of similar solid. Low hanging fruit. The half-dozen or so genuinely new ones (hebesphenomegacorona(?) et al) I am thinking about. The coords are algebraic, but this doesn't mean much. It is probably easiest to use a "ball and spring" simulation to solve for the coords. ... or find the coords somewhere else (no challenge). Andrew Kepert 04:23, 4 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Polyhedral nets

Hi Cyp,

I just noticed where you have been inserting nets (flattened skins) of polyhedra here and there. With these, it is probably best to add a caption or explanation on what the image is. Does a page net (polyhedron) or similar exist? If not, it should, and you could put on each image a caption like "The net of the fubarahedron". (Ref: http://mathworld.wolfram.com/Net.html).

I have been thinking of using Wikipedia:Infobox templates for the polyhedron pages. My feeling is that the net of the polyhedron could be put in here. I will to look up how to create one of these.

Also I noticed that your images have heavier lines on the joins, presumably from being redrawn. Bug or feature?

Cheers, Andrew Kepert 00:52, 8 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Update - I have implemented two templates. See their use at Hebesphenomegacorona and Cuboctahedron. As I understand them, the templates don't have optional parameters (e.g. for most of the Johnson solids I don't think it is worth having a line for "dual" - this is not possible to disable) but there may be work-arounds using subtemplates and such. Too sophisticated for a first attempt. Also I think the template needs an "image caption" parameter (which could be blank) as your previous version of cuboctahedron page did have text there. Andrew Kepert 08:19, 8 Nov 2004 (UTC)
P.S. See User:AndrewKepert/polyhedra
The heavier lines on the joins were so it's easy to tell the difference between the edges and the joins. Also (actually the main reason) because it was easier to program that way. I inserted nets for all the platonic solids and archimedean solids. Think nets for the catalan solids would be harder to make. I was just throwing them in there, without worrying about layout. The last few were thrown in even faster, when I figured out how to use "{{subst:PAGENAME}}" = "Cyp" to save time.
How hard is it to make the remaining Johnson solids, compared to the ones already done? You seemed to be doing them so fast, that most would be done before I could program the program to sew up nets. In any case, I think I should make nets for them all, even if they can all be modelled without writing a program for it. I think there may be alternate ways of folding some nets, but folding starting folding from the corners with largest angles would probably work for most or all... Should be trivial to check how good a solution is, so should be relatively trivial to make a program for folding, just not sure if it would have a reasonable running time... I got bored with the cut-and-paste polyhedra (I started more of these than I finished) and decided that the sporadic ones (J84-J92) were a bit more of a challenge. I will get back to the others. It was a bit weird programming that stuff in povray, but it works, so who is to argue? In terms of the nets, I was thinking whether it could be done in reverse, constructing a net from the polyhedron, maybe via a breadth-first search. Anyway, I have serious stuff to deal with, and may not get back to this for a bit. I have added a todo to User:AndrewKepert/poly.pov if you feel you want to move it along a bit. If anything, I may do J90-J92 on the weekend. Andrew Kepert 00:00, 12 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Rice's theorem response

Hi, I noticed this rather ancient comment of yours on Talk: Rice's theorem:

Isn't it decidable if an algorithm halts after 3 billion steps? Can't you test it by running it for 3 billion steps? كسيپ Cyp 22:05 8 Jun 2003 (UTC)

This is a common confusion, and I added this paragraph to the article to help address it:

It is important to note that Rice's Theorem does not say anything about properties of machines, only of functions and languages. For example, asking whether a machine runs for more than 100 steps on some input, whether it has more than 5 states, or whether it ever moves its tape head to the left are all nontrivial but decidable properties. They are not properties of the language because it is possible to find two machines recognizing exactly the same language, one which has the property and one which does not.

In short, Rice's Theorem only applies if the property being decided is a property not of the specific machine but of the language recognized by that machine. Derrick Coetzee 06:55, 31 Oct 2004 (UTC)

I wrote that when there was an early, short version of the page. I don't think it was clear to me at the time, that it had nothing to do with actual implementations or actual turing machines. Κσυπ Cyp   22:51, 3 Nov 2004 (UTC)
Well, it's not exactly true to say it has nothing to do with actual Turing machines either. It is often stated in terms of deciding a property of a given Turing machine, and a property's nontriviality can also be defined in terms of recognizable languages. Deco 16:52, 4 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Animated solids

I like the animated solids. How easy is it to slow them down? I feel we really need two versions - your current fast versions which give an overall impresion of the solids and a much slower version which allows you to inspect each view for a cople of seconds before stepping on. (Ditto the 4D 24-cell - did you do that one too?) -- SGBailey 09:02, 2004 Nov 18 (UTC)

Johnson solids

Hi again Cyp.

FYI - I have finished the Johnson solid images and stubs. Some work to be done, most of it relating to filling the infobox, but there are also some images to re-render. User:AndrewKepert/poly.pov is now current, although it is getting very crufty. I was thinking of changing the lighting/surface properties so that the Platonics were (say) red, the Archimedeans green, the catalans blue and the Johnsons yellow, but that would involve a major render and upload project. 8-P Since there are more J's than anything else, maybe they would stay green. I wish I had thought of this before I started.

I was hoping to get some feedback somewhere between rabid enthusiasm and outright digust regarding the infobox template - see User:AndrewKepert/polyhedra#Templatisation. In particular from the point of view of ease-of-edit, beauty and content. Another thing I have been experimenting with is forward-back browse links -- there are some stretches of the sequence implemented around J44 and J68. The main difference to your hand-coded tables is that I need to figure the best way to incorporate optional extra image links as you have used in places. Maybe another template variant is required.

Cheers, Andrew Kepert 08:40, 2 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Sorry, haven't really had much time lately to work on it... If you finished calculating all solids, then there's no point in me trying to finish my program to find the coordinates... (Not sure when I would have gotten around to finishing it, anyway.) Since I have a faster computer now, it should be possible to help render them in a realistic time-frame... Think rendering the default one (1024x1024 or whatever I rendered the platonics, archimedeans and catalans as) took about 10 minutes, can't remember. If there's some program for turning a mass of 24-bit colour images into an animated .gif, without user interaction, it would be more practical to make videos. Was going to make a program to crop the border, but didn't do that yet. Without using the automatic framing feature, will it render them all within equally sized unit spheres? (Perhaps a bit silly and pointless, but I prefer if they are all rendered identically like that.) I don't know whether or not me helping with rendering is useful - don't know if you have a supercomputer cluster or a 4.77MHz 80286 (might be what my first computer was)... (The new computer is an AMD64 3200+ (2211.087 actual MHz), 512 Mb memory.) Finding the coordinates of and rendering all 13 archimedean solids seemed like a lot of effort, and you just did 92 more solids somehow...
There's no outright disgust about the infobox template, so I guess it must be rabid enthusiasm. Easier to edit is better, and after making 92 pages, I expect that you know more than me about ease of editing. Appearance was the same as before, I think (haven't looked carefully for details). As for making extra image links or having variations, think I've seen something like {{boxstart}}{{somesection}}info about something{{nextsection}}info about next thing{{boxend}}, or something like that, with a rather broken-up template. Κσυπ Cyp   20:21, 4 Dec 2004 (UTC)
Been busy too. Annoying how real work gets in the way sometimes.
I was doing smaller (5122) renders as I didn't see much point in going bigger - more upload bandwidth, more wiki server storage and resize overhead. On my mac (G4 1.25GHz x 2 IIRC) they are pretty quick, and it is easy to run several instances of it (from a shell) then go away and do something else. They only use about 2 MB RAM each, so they don't thrash. Actually some of my renders were done on a much slower machine - 300MHz or 350MHz - while I was working on something else. I cheated a lot with the coords - you provided most of them (there are something like 13 variants of the rhombicosidodecahedron). I just wrote workable macros to cull vertices, cull, offset and twist half-spaces, add caps (pyramid/cupola) and the optimise() routine to handle the sporadics. I felt a couple of times like diving in and making the growing mess of code more elegant, but this desire never reached ignition point.
The easiest way to convert a stack of images down to a gif is ImageMagick (under linux or similar). However, I think animated gifs really suck for this sort of thing - inefficient and no playback control. A proper movie format compresses better and would mostly render in browser with playback controls. mpeg is handled by most players, and ImageMagick can encode (or mpeg_encode). I think ImageMagick will even crop for you.
Yes, on skimming the template spec I saw that there were some hacks to make optional sections work - I couldn't see much sense in it so I kept away. What is really needed within the templates is "#ifdef foo ... #fi" and "#ifndef bah ... #fi". The benefit of the template is the ability to make uniform changes. In the end I was not editing those pages anyway - they were coming straight off a spreadsheet. I have to go back and hand-edit things like symmetry groups and relationships between Jn's. I also will go through and tidy load of uniform stuff some anonymite dumped on every page at the 3/4 complete stage instead of either (a) waiting until I had finished or (b) putting on the Johnson solid page - oh well.
Finally I don't care much about bounding spheres, but they make sense if you are rotating. My autoframing basically ignores them. Have you considered rotating on an axis of symmetry so that you only need a fraction of the frames? Andrew Kepert 01:38, 7 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Article Licensing

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "{{DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual}}" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to [[Wikipedia:Multi-licensing|multi-license]] all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
{{DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual}}

OR

Option 2
I agree to [[Wikipedia:Multi-licensing|multi-license]] all my contributions to any [[U.S. state]], county, or city article as described below:
{{DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual}}

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "{{DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual}}" with "{{MultiLicensePD}}". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=User_talk:Ram-Man&action=edit&section=new)| talk)

Unverified image

Hi! Thanks for uploading the following image:

I notice it currently doesn't have an image copyright tag. Could you add one to let us know its copyright status? (You can use {{gfdl}}: {{gfdl}} if you release it under the GNU Free Documentation License, {{fairuse}}: {{fairuse}}if you claim fair use, etc.) If you don't know what any of this means, just let me know at my talk page where you got the images and I'll tag them for you. Thanks so much. Denni 04:23, 2004 Dec 13 (UTC)

P.S. You can help tag other images at User:Yann/Untagged_Images. Thanks again.

I've written a clarification at the talk page (I scanned it myself). I'm unsure whether DRoA has any rights at all (including the right to exist), and think it's likely to be {{PD}}. Κσυπ Cyp   17:22, 13 Dec 2004 (UTC)
