Hemphill County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 3,351. Its county seat is Canadian6. Hemphill County is named for John Hemphill, a judge and Confederate congressman.

Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,362 km² (912 mi²). 2,356 km² (910 mi²) of it is land and 6 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.26% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,351 people, 1,280 households, and 948 families residing in the county. The population density is 1/km² (4/mi²). There are 1,548 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (2/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 87.65% White, 1.55% Black or African American, 0.72% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 8.48% from other races, and 1.31% from two or more races. 15.58% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,280 households out of which 32.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.20% are married couples living together, 5.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.90% are non-families. 24.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 2.98.
In the county, the population is spread out with 28.00% under the age of 18, 6.50% from 18 to 24, 25.30% from 25 to 44, 25.40% from 45 to 64, and 14.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 101.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.20 males.
