Cooke County, Texas

Cooke County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 36,363. Its county seat is Gainesville6. Cooke is named for William Gordon Cooke, a soldier during the Texas Revolution.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,328 km² (899 mi²). 2,263 km² (874 mi²) of it is land and 65 km² (25 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.80% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 36,363 people, 13,643 households, and 10,000 families residing in the county. The population density is 16/km² (42/mi²). There are 15,061 housing units at an average density of 7/km² (17/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 88.84% White, 3.06% Black or African American, 1.00% Native American, 0.34% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 5.16% from other races, and 1.61% from two or more races. 9.97% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 13,643 households out of which 33.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.60% are married couples living together, 9.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.70% are non-families. 23.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.60 and the average family size is 3.07.

In the county, the population is spread out with 27.30% under the age of 18, 8.70% from 18 to 24, 26.10% from 25 to 44, 23.00% from 45 to 64, and 14.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 97.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $37,649, and the median income for a family is $44,869. Males have a median income of $32,429 versus $22,065 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,889. 14.10% of the population and 10.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 19.80% of those under the age of 18 and 10.70% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
