South Charleston is a city located in Kanawha County, West Virginia. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 13,390.

South Charleston is located at 38°21'9" North, 81°42'43" West (38.352455, -81.712001)Template:GR.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 21.5 km² (8.3 mi²). 19.2 km² (7.4 mi²) of it is land and 2.3 km² (0.9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 10.60% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 13,390 people, 6,316 households, and 3,764 families residing in the city. The population density is 695.8/km² (1,803.0/mi²). There are 6,770 housing units at an average density of 351.8/km² (911.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 90.85% White, 6.67% African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.81% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.24% from other races, and 1.28% from two or more races. 0.56% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 6,316 households out of which 22.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.9% are married couples living together, 12.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.4% are non-families. 35.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.11 and the average family size is 2.72.
