Hancock County is a county located in the state of West Virginia. As of 2000, the population is 32,667. Its county seat is New Cumberland6.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 229 km² (88 mi²). 214 km² (83 mi²) of it is land and 14 km² (6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 6.26% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 32,667 people, 13,678 households, and 9,506 families residing in the county. The population density is 152/km² (394/mi²). There are 14,728 housing units at an average density of 69/km² (178/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.42% White, 2.30% Black or African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.35% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.12% from other races, and 0.69% from two or more races. 0.74% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 13,678 households out of which 26.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.70% are married couples living together, 10.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.50% are non-families. 26.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.36 and the average family size is 2.83.
In the county, the population is spread out with 20.80% under the age of 18, 7.20% from 18 to 24, 27.10% from 25 to 44, 26.40% from 45 to 64, and 18.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 92.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.40 males.
