Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,244 km² (480 mi²). 1,236 km² (477 mi²) of it is land and 8 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.62% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 11,299 people, 4,591 households, and 3,273 families residing in the county. The population density is 9/km² (24/mi²). There are 6,105 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (13/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.33% White, 0.67% Black or African American, 0.26% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.13% from other races, and 0.45% from two or more races. 0.55% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 4,591 households out of which 30.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.50% are married couples living together, 8.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.70% are non-families. 24.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
