Oak Hill, West Virginia

Oak Hill is a city located in Fayette County, West Virginia. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 7,589. It is perhaps best known as the place of death of country music legend Hank Williams.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 12.5 km² (4.8 mi²). 12.5 km² (4.8 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 7,589 people, 3,297 households, and 2,123 families residing in the city. The population density is 606.7/km² (1,570.9/mi²). There are 3,619 housing units at an average density of 289.3/km² (749.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 93.02% White, 4.80% African American, 0.32% Native American, 0.42% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.24% from other races, and 1.19% from two or more races. 0.84% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,297 households out of which 27.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.1% are married couples living together, 13.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.6% are non-families. 31.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.25 and the average family size is 2.80.

In the city the population is spread out with 20.5% under the age of 18, 8.5% from 18 to 24, 26.0% from 25 to 44, 24.7% from 45 to 64, and 20.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 87.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $24,792, and the median income for a family is $33,183. Males have a median income of $27,595 versus $18,760 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,347. 17.7% of the population and 14.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 27.9% of those under the age of 18 and 11.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
