Newburgh (town), New York

Newburgh is a town located in Orange County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 27,568.

The Town of Newburgh is in the northeast corner of the county and abuts the City of Newburgh.

Stewart International Airport is located in Newburgh, which helps decongest the major airports of New York City.

Geography

The north town line is the border of Ulster County, New York, and the east town line, marked by the Hudson River, is the border of Dutchess County, New York.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 121.7 km² (47.0 mi²). 113.2 km² (43.7 mi²) of it is land and 8.6 km² (3.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 7.04% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 27,568 people, 9,765 households, and 7,519 families residing in the town. The population density is 243.6/km² (631.0/mi²). There are 10,122 housing units at an average density of 89.5/km² (231.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 85.08% White, 7.56% Black or African American, 0.15% Native American, 2.06% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 3.07% from other races, and 2.06% from two or more races. 9.59% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 9,765 households out of which 36.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.6% are married couples living together, 10.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.0% are non-families. 17.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.80 and the average family size is 3.19.

In the town the population is spread out with 26.2% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 30.1% from 25 to 44, 24.6% from 45 to 64, and 12.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 96.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.7 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $60,017, and the median income for a family is $66,706. Males have a median income of $45,398 versus $32,432 for females. The per capita income for the town is $24,749. 3.8% of the population and 2.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.8% of those under the age of 18 and 6.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
