Dolores County is a county located in the U.S. state of Colorado. As of 2000, the population is 1,844. The county seat is Dove Creek.

History

Dolores County was created by the Colorado legislature on February 19, 1881 out of the western portions of San Juan County. Originally set in Rico, the county seeat was moved to Dove Creek in 1941.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,766 km² (1,068 mi²). 2,763 km² (1,067 mi²) of it is land and 3 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.11% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,844 people, 785 households, and 541 families residing in the county. The population density is 1/km² (2/mi²). There are 1,193 housing units at an average density of 0/km² (1/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 95.28% White, 0.05% Black or African American, 1.95% Native American, 0.38% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.60% from other races, and 1.68% from two or more races. 3.85% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 785 households out of which 24.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.70% are married couples living together, 8.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.00% are non-families. 26.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.35 and the average family size is 2.82.

In the county the population is spread out with 21.90% under the age of 18, 6.80% from 18 to 24, 26.30% from 25 to 44, 27.80% from 45 to 64, and 17.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 107.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 104.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $32,196, and the median income for a family is $38,000. Males have a median income of $30,972 versus $20,385 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,106. 13.10% of the population and 10.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 9.80% of those under the age of 18 and 18.30% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
