Baca County is a county located in the U.S. state of Colorado. As of 2000, the population is 4,517. The county seat is Springfield.

History
Baca County was created by the Colorado legislature on April 16, 1889 out of the eastern portions of Las Animas County.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 6,623 km² (2,557 mi²). 6,619 km² (2,556 mi²) of it is land and 4 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.05% water.

Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,517 people, 1,905 households, and 1,268 families residing in the county. The population density is 1/km² (2/mi²). There are 2,364 housing units at an average density of 0/km² (1/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 93.73% White, 0.04% Black or African American, 1.20% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 2.99% from other races, and 1.79% from two or more races. 7.02% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,905 households out of which 28.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.80% are married couples living together, 7.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.40% are non-families. 30.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.33 and the average family size is 2.90.
In the county the population is spread out with 24.50% under the age of 18, 5.90% from 18 to 24, 22.70% from 25 to 44, 24.50% from 45 to 64, and 22.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 99.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.50 males.
