Denmark Hill railway station
|
Denmark Hill railway station is on the inner South London Line (sometimes also known as the South London Link) from London Victoria to London Bridge. It has a train service in each direction roughly once every thirty minutes. South Eastern trains also serve Denmark Hill on the lines from London Victoria to Dartford and London Blackfriars to Sevenoaks.
The station is located on Champion Park (just off the road called Denmark Hill), and was built in 1866. Its design is in the Italianate style, with an extremely decorative frontage. A fire in 1980 meant restoration: this included the addition of a public house, initially called the Phoenix and Firkin to commemorate the fire, then called O'Neills and now known simply as the Phoenix. A Civic Trust award was given to the building in 1986. The platforms are below road level and there ia a short tunnels at one end of the platforms, and road bridge (underneath Denmark Hill the road) at the other end.
The station serves both the King's College and Maudsley hospitals.
It is managed by South Eastern Trains, with South London Line services being run by Southern; the next stations in either direction on the South London line are Clapham High Street (to the west, towards Victoria) and Peckham Rye (to the east, towards London Bridge). Heading towards London Blackfriars, the next station is Elephant & Castle, and heading towards Dartford the next station is Peckham Rye.
