Washington County is a county located in the state of Maine. As of 2000, the population is 33,941. Its county seat is Machias6.

Sometimes referred to as "Sunrise Country" because of its location as the easternmost territory of the United States, where the rising sun first touches U.S. soil, Washington County is a strong example of Maine's traditional "Downeast" coastal area. Many small seaside communities are said to preserve their old way of life, based on small-scale fishing economies. Tourism is also important along the beautiful coast, but is not as pervasive as elsewhere in the state.
