Old Town is a city located in Penobscot County, Maine. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 8,130.

Many of the residents work for the town's Georgia-Pacific plant or are students at the University of Maine. As of March 2004, Old Town is currently experiencing a dispute over whether a new landfill should be created in the town.

Old Town is also home to a previous residence of Melville Weston Fuller, former chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court.

Geography

Old Town is located at 44°56'35" North, 68°40'35" West (44.943047, -68.676461)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 110.5 km² (42.7 mi²). 99.2 km² (38.3 mi²) of it is land and 11.3 km² (4.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 10.24% water.

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 8,130 people, 3,426 households, and 1,993 families residing in the city. The population density is 82.0/km² (212.3/mi²). There are 3,686 housing units at an average density of 37.2/km² (96.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 94.62% White, 0.65% African American, 1.48% Native American, 1.83% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.28% from other races, and 1.09% from two or more races. 0.52% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,426 households out of which 26.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.7% are married couples living together, 10.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 41.8% are non-families. 29.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.30 and the average family size is 2.83.

In the city the population is spread out with 20.0% under the age of 18, 18.3% from 18 to 24, 27.0% from 25 to 44, 20.8% from 45 to 64, and 13.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.8 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $29,886, and the median income for a family is $40,589. Males have a median income of $32,961 versus $23,723 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,100. 18.6% of the population and 11.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.6% of those under the age of 18 and 14.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
