Auburn is a city located in Androscoggin County, Maine. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 23,203. It is the county seat of Androscoggin CountyTemplate:GR.
Geography
Auburn is located at 44°5'21" North, 70°14'29" West (44.089173, -70.241437)Template:GR.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 170.4 km² (65.8 mi²). 154.8 km² (59.8 mi²) of it is land and 15.6 km² (6.0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 9.13% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 23,203 people, 9,764 households, and 5,907 families residing in the city. The population density is 149.9/km² (388.1/mi²). There are 10,608 housing units at an average density of 68.5/km² (177.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 97.04% White, 0.59% African American, 0.30% Native American, 0.59% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.10% from other races, and 1.32% from two or more races. 0.73% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 9,764 households out of which 29.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.9% are married couples living together, 11.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 39.5% are non-families. 32.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.28 and the average family size is 2.88.
In the city the population is spread out with 23.2% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 29.3% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 90.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.9 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $35,652, and the median income for a family is $44,012. Males have a median income of $32,088 versus $22,349 for females.
