Old Orchard Beach is a census-designated place located in York County, Maine. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 8,856. Located on the inner side of Saco Bay on the Atlantic Ocean, the town is a popular summer beach destination, with an amusement park (including a large seaside ferris wheel). The downtown contains many tourist-oriented businesses, including clam shacks and t-shirt shops. A wooden pier on the beach contains many other tourist business, including a variety of souvenir shops. The beach stretching away from the downtown is lined with many beach residential properties and condominiums.

Geography

Old Orchard Beach is located at 43°30'49" North, 70°23'7" West (43.513714, -70.385363)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 19.6 km² (7.6 mi²). 19.3 km² (7.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.3 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.32% water.

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 8,856 people, 4,294 households, and 2,254 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 459.0/km² (1,188.8/mi²). There are 6,222 housing units at an average density of 322.5/km² (835.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 97.54% White, 0.56% Black or African American, 0.28% Native American, 0.46% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.23% from other races, and 0.89% from two or more races. 1.02% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,294 households out of which 22.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.7% are married couples living together, 10.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 47.5% are non-families. 38.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.05 and the average family size is 2.73.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 19.1% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 33.2% from 25 to 44, 26.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 96.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.0 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $36,568, and the median income for a family is $47,952. Males have a median income of $36,089 versus $26,429 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $20,929. 11.0% of the population and 7.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.7% of those under the age of 18 and 15.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
