Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 6,089 km² (2,351 mi²). 4,112 km² (1,588 mi²) of it is land and 1,977 km² (763 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 32.47% water.

The racial makeup of the county is 97.61% White, 0.25% Black or African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.38% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.20% from other races, and 1.15% from two or more races. 0.65% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 21,864 households out of which 28.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.50% are married couples living together, 8.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.90% are non-families. 27.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.31 and the average family size is 2.81.
