FYI: I left User:Vancouverguy and User:Dunshi notes asking them not to declare that people are banned who haven't been.Vicki Rosenzweig 02:59, 4 Aug 2003 (UTC)

Thanks very much - I should have done that myself really. --Camembert

I'm not the one who announced that. Vancouverguy 02:59, 4 Aug 2003 (UTC)

Indeed. Anyway, it's wrong whoever said it. --Camembert

Oh, it added something, all right: a sense of disorientation and nausea as the blue links seemed to split into two and drift apart and the whole screen took on an otherworldly shimmer. ... Don't try this in a dark room, or sitting close.  ;-) Koyaanis Qatsi 00:36, 5 Aug 2003 (UTC)

Good choice! I knew something was awkward when I wrote that, but had a bit of brain fog and couldn't quite figure out what it was. Thanks. -- Tlotoxl 00:38, 20 Aug 2003 (UTC)

Hi, given that you are a chess contributor, I would be glad if you would express your opinion about National chess champions, which is marked for deletion and nobody except me is saying anything about it. If you support the deletion I will agree with it. Thanks in advance. Jmartinezot 10:18, 20 Aug 2003 (UTC)

I wouldn't support deletion, but possibly it should be moved to List of national chess championships. I'm a bit short of time at the moment, but I'll have a proper look at it later tonight. --Camembert

I think you are right and that List of national chess championships is a better title. Thanks. -- Jmartinezot

Fun with German

On Mozart, Austria, and Germany, see this report of an ambassadorial complaint (http://www.buzzle.com/editorials/8-7-2003-43947.asp). It's sort of a senseless issue, since some will conceptualize "German" as an ethnicity, others as a nationality, etc., and will argue for their choice from vast resources of amour-propre. Maybe we'll wind up having to call him a "European" composer <G>. -- Someone else 02:12, 21 Aug 2003 (UTC)

A noble and no doubt thankless task you have set for yourself. I myself have always preferred Shakespeare in the original German.... -- Someone else 02:32, 21 Aug 2003 (UTC)
Hm, not sure I like the idea of being noble - Elgar was always being noble, and I never much liked Elgar. But, as the Bard of the Oder said: Ganze Welt ist eine, er, Bühne, und alle, erm, Menschen or something, und... ah well, you get the idea. --Camembert

Bon mot (possibly) of interest

There's a bon mot of sorts on William Shatner's version of Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds, which I fear you'll miss unless specifically directed there (and to read to the end<G>!) -- Someone else 02:05, 24 Aug 2003 (UTC)

Heh - thanks for pointing it out, I would indeed have missed it otherwise :) --Camembert

Hello Camembert

This is about the 'Safavid': Seeing everything back to what it was so quickly was much unexpected. As about 'Safavies' I made it from 'Safavi' according to English language. The count for 'Safavi' in Google is 8230 and for 'Safavid' is 10800. I appreciate what you are saying but you have to understand that there is no pronunciation of ’d’ in the word. I guess the mistake comes from the foreign writers which have not been familiar with Farsi. Anyway as we all trying to develop the encyclopedia it's better to teach people the proper spell and pronunciation of the word. As I said before there is no need to delete 'Safavid' we can have that in the 'safavi' page as an alternative spell so people can get to the page with both spells but they learn the right one.

If you want to discuss this matter please leave your note on Safavid or this page. Thank you

Thanks for your note: I've repsonded at Talk:Safavids. --Camembert

Scribble away, by all means. If you could tie in Evolution Control Committee with The Bran Flakes and DJ Shadow that would be great; if not, that's the way of wikipedia.  :-) Koyaanis Qatsi 01:26, 26 Aug 2003 (UTC)

That's a great start you made. I made a few minor expansions and corrected some typos (there was another which I didn't find again--I guess someone else will).  :-) Anyway, the only change I thought you might not like was to remove "edited and/or" from "edited and/or altered": it seems to me that altering encompasses editing but editing doesn't include recontextualizing an entire work (a la the Whipped Cream Remixes and many DJ mixes). What do you think? Koyaanis Qatsi 13:25, 26 Aug 2003 (UTC) P.S. on reading the article, it seems that citing sources is a requirement to qualify as plunderphonics. Is that the case? If so, I've made a bad recommendation: DJ Shadow either cites some but not all of his sources or makes some of his own (at least on Private Press), and The Bran Flakes don't cite any (at least on Bounces!).
Bounces! has enough energy in it to power a small town for a week. ... Dictionaraoke sounds intriguing; I'll have to look into that. Koyaanis Qatsi 12:10, 27 Aug 2003 (UTC)

Given your conversation with User:JoeM, you may be interested in helping to improve common sense conservative.

Copyvios

It seems that the golf articles were submitted by their original author so I have reverted the copyvio notices on the pages for now and passed the details onto Jimbo. Angela 22:23, Sep 14, 2003 (UTC)

Hi, I have a question about this latest Michael appearance...if he (or anyone else, I suppose) moves a legitimate page to a junk page, you would then delete the original page so you can move the junk page back? At least, I think that is what you did just now :) I'm curious because I couldn't figure out how to revert that when I saw it, and for some bizarre reason I like to help clean up after Michael appearances. But I can't see how to squeeze in with your system. Appreciate some guidance.jonhays 20:26, 22 Sep 2003 (UTC)

I'm probably not going to be very clear here, but I'll have a go: all you need to do is put a new line below the last item on that list, and begin it with an asterisk. The parser will convert any line that starts with an asterisk into an underordered list item. So, for example, if you put something like this in the edit window:
*This is unordered list item number one
*This is item number two
*This is item number three
It'll get turned into this:
  • This is unordered list item number one

  • This is item number two
  • This is item number three
The parser closes the list automatically, you don't have to worry about putting html in there or anything. I hope this helps. --Camembert

Thank you. I've used asterisk for a new list, but hadn't tried in in extending a list.

You wrote:

Rick, Donnie hasn't "created multiple user pages" at all - he hasn't even created his own. There is no reason whatsoever to believe that Donnie is the same person as User:Tester.

Sure there is. I find Tester's contribs (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=Special:Contributions&target=Tester) pretty convincing. -- Cyan 01:32, 14 Oct 2003 (UTC)

There are two possible hypotheses about the users listed on Tester's contributions:

  1. All of these users are distinct people;
  2. Some of these users are the same person.

There is a distinct similarity between Donnie Ng's style of contribution (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=Special:Contributions&target=Donnie_Ng) and Wartortle's style of contribution (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=Special:Contributions&target=Wartortle). But the clincher is this edit (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/wiki.phtml?title=Wikipedia:Votes_for_deletion&diff=1562017&oldid=1561980) by User:Groessler, which strongly suggests that Wartortle and Groessler are the same person trying to appear to be two different people. Upon careful thinking about the matter, I admit it's unclear Tester is part of the group of aliases. -- Cyan 02:02, 14 Oct 2003 (UTC)

You've made links in the section heading "External Links" begin with a lowercase L, saying that was how it should be. However, the vast majority of Wikipedia article have the capitalisation "External Links", and for the sake of conformity and coherance it should be that way with all edited or new articles. So, I've reverted your change. Kricxjo 10:49, 16 Oct 2003 (UTC)

Well, I think "vast majority" is over doing it a bit, but in any case, see the Wikipedia:Manual of Style. (slightly longer response on your talk page) --Camembert

A really great, clear, concise piece on Glass opera 'Einstein on the Beach'. Hard to believe after 1639000 odd articles no-one had written about it before not even by a U.S. citizen!!Norwikian 13:59, 16 Oct 2003 (UTC

Thanks, but I only made a minor edit to it - somebody else wrote the bulk of it (such as it is). Great piece though :) --Camembert

That is some mighty task you've set yourself (20th c. composers)! I thought that you might have omitted Arnold, (whom I've met a couple of times) but on closer scrutiny the composer of the whistling melody for the film 'Bridge on the River Kwai' has not escaped you!!Norwikian 14:07, 16 Oct 2003 (UTC)

Well, I'm not really setting myself any tasks, I'm just writing what I can when I can. By the way, I don't think Arnold wrote the whistled melody in ...Kwai did he? It's the "Colonel Bogey March" (by F.J. Ricketts), I think. He just arranged it and wrote the rest of the music in the film (OK, I'm a pedant ;) . --Camembert

RE: Opera box game. You have stated that "Opera box game" would be a better title for the article than "Opera game." I was under the impression that "Opera Game" is an exact title, rather than a mere description, thereby necessitating its usage. (I have not heard of any other title for the chess game, except for "Opera House Massacre," which might provide some unintended connotations.) I thank you for your concern. --Lord Emsworth 23:57, Oct 22, 2003 (UTC)

I have no objection if you wish to rename the Opera Game. In re the PGN Format, I chose it since the pages on the Immortal Game and the Evergreen game also use it; I assumed that PGN is the standard format for this site.

My interest was picqued by your comment about the Opera Box Game. I put some questions there about the identity of the participants and the opera, I'm thinking of trying to identify the Duke and Count, but if you already know, do chime in! -- Someone else 00:57, 23 Oct 2003 (UTC)

Just had a quick look through my books, and I can't find anything more precise than "the Duke of Brunswick and Count Isouard", I'm afraid. I'll ask around and see if I can come up with anything better. --Camembert

Actually, those are special powers you do have. I don't think its necessary to list the names of his compositions, in the first paragraph -- Re: Johannes Brahms Lirath Q. Pynnor

I feel that, except in a situation such as with Dead Souls, where one work is exceptionally notable, we shouldn't list the works. My edits would be better, but, Im sure you can see that Wik's harrassment makes things difficult. Lirath Q. Pynnor

I think in cases like User:Mr. Bush, where he's actually used that name to edit, it's best to keep the redirect in place. Not sure if there are any others you redirected, but they probably do no real harm anyway. Anyway, have you thought of asking to be made an admin? There is a reference to the term sopranistas in the castrato article. Is this the same as a counter-tenor? -- Viajero 21:00, 29 Nov 2003 (UTC)

That's a good question, and I don't really know the answer. All I know about the subject is what's on sopranista itself and its talk page (where I queried the term myself a few months ago). I'd never heard of the term until I saw it here on the Wikipedia, and when I tried to look into it further, I didn't come up with anything much, so I don't know any more, I'm afraid. --Camembert

PS Obviously I didn't post the above comment several times. But it seems to take up to five minutes to save a page, and with the Hegel comment I thought it hadn't worked at all. I don't know what's wrong. I'm now going to press "Save page", have a cup of tea in another room and ignore this machine for some time. --KF 15:59, 13 Jan 2004 (UTC)

I've replied on your talk page (short version: I was just fixing double redirects, it's now back to it's old location, and I've no problems with that). Hm, tea, there's an idea... --Camembert
