Summit County politics illustrate the growth occurring around Park City in the western half of the county. Typically the western half favours more liberal measures and candidates with the eastern side taking a more conservative stance, however all Summit County residents seem to have a live-and-let live attitude about them. This bipolar nature can be seen in election returns, at the 2004 General Election George W. Bush beat his Democratic Party opponent, Senator John Kerry by 51%-47% but on the same ballot residents voting against a state Constitutional Amendment to ban Same Sex marriage by a vote of 61%-39%. In addition local politics trends toward the Democratic Party, the members of which hold most elected local government posts including all three members of the County Commission, the Sheriff and County Attorney, among others.
