Sioux County is a county located in the state of North Dakota. As of 2000, the population is 4,044. Its county seat is Fort Yates6.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,922 km² (1,128 mi²). 2,834 km² (1,094 mi²) of it is land and 89 km² (34 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.03% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,044 people, 1,095 households, and 871 families residing in the county. The population density is 1/km² (4/mi²). There are 1,216 housing units at an average density of 0/km² (1/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 14.34% White, 0.02% Black or African American, 84.59% Native American, 0.02% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.07% from other races, and 0.89% from two or more races. 1.61% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,095 households out of which 48.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.10% are married couples living together, 29.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 20.40% are non-families. 16.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.63 and the average family size is 3.98.
In the county the population is spread out with 40.30% under the age of 18, 11.10% from 18 to 24, 26.90% from 25 to 44, 16.20% from 45 to 64, and 5.60% who are 65 years of age or older.
