Grand Forks County is a county located in the state of North Dakota. As of 2000, the population is 66,109. Its county seat and largest community is Grand Forks6. Grand Forks County and Polk County, Minnesota make up the Greater Grand Forks metropolitan area.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,729 km² (1,440 mi²). 3,724 km² (1,438 mi²) of it is land and 5 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.14% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 66,109 people, 25,435 households, and 15,617 families residing in the county. The population density is 18/km² (46/mi²). There are 27,373 housing units at an average density of 7/km² (19/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 93.00% White, 1.37% Black or African American, 2.31% Native American, 0.98% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.72% from other races, and 1.57% from two or more races. 2.06% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 25,435 households out of which 32.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.5% are married couples living together, 8.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.6% are non-families. 28.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.43 and the average family size is 3.03.

In the county the population is spread out with 23.8% under the age of 18, 19.6% from 18 to 24, 28.8% from 25 to 44, 18.2% from 45 to 64, and 9.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 29 years. For every 100 females there are 103.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 102.3 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $35,785, and the median income for a family is $46,620. Males have a median income of $30,079 versus $21,426 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,868. 12.3% of the population and 8.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 12.0% of those under the age of 18 and 7.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
