Jamestown is a city located in Stutsman County, North Dakota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 15,527. It is the county seat of Stutsman CountyTemplate:GR.

The local paper is the Jamestown Sun. Jamestown Regional Airport serves the city.

Jamestown is located at 46°54'20" North, 98°42'11" West (46.905641, -98.702994)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 32.4 km² (12.5 mi²). 32.2 km² (12.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.40% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 15,527 people, 6,505 households, and 3,798 families residing in the city. The population density is 481.5/km² (1,246.7/mi²). There are 6,970 housing units at an average density of 216.2/km² (559.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 96.84% White, 0.36% African American, 1.21% Native American, 0.49% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.27% from other races, and 0.78% from two or more races. 1.19% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The top 6 ancestry groups in the city are German (54.0%), Norwegian (22.4%), Irish (9.0%), English (6.6%), Swedish (4.1%), Russian (3.8%). Many area families cite their heritage as "Germans from Russia," in reference to a group of German emigrants who temporarily settled in Russia before coming to the United States.

There are 6,505 households out of which 27.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.8% are married couples living together, 8.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 41.6% are non-families. 37.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.17 and the average family size is 2.85.

In the city the population is spread out with 21.7% under the age of 18, 12.7% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 21.8% from 45 to 64, and 18.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 92.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $31,500, and the median income for a family is $42,245. Males have a median income of $28,310 versus $20,225 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,686. 10.7% of the population and 6.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 12.4% of those under the age of 18 and 10.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Culture

The pride of Jamestown is White Cloud, an albino buffalo housed in a large, fenced off area next to Jamestown's Frontier Village. White Cloud lives with her daughter, Princess Winona, amongst a herd of fellow buffalo. Famous natives of Jamestown include western author Louis L'Amour, pop singer Peggy Lee, disk jockey Shadoe Stevens, and California Angels' star Darin Erstad.

Jamestown is also the home of the "World's Largest Buffalo." This giant cement monstrosity overlooks the city in a tourist attraction, The Frontier Village.
