Gastonia is a city located in Gaston County in North Carolina, a state of the United States of America. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 66,277. It is the county seat of Gaston CountyTemplate:GR.

Gastonia is located at 35°15'19" North, 81°10'49" West (35.255220, -81.180249)Template:GR.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 119.8 km² (46.3 mi²). 119.3 km² (46.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.43% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 67,781 people, 25,945 households, and 17,720 families residing in the city. The population density is 555.6/km² (1,438.9/mi²). There are 27,857 housing units at an average density of 233.5/km² (604.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 70.18% White, 25.62% African American, 0.21% Native American, 1.17% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.76% from other races, and 1.04% from two or more races. 5.45% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 25,945 households out of which 30.6% have children under the living with them, 47.3% are married couples living together, 16.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.7% are non-families. 26.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 3.00.
In the city the population is spread out with 25.0% under the , 8.8% from 18 to 24, 30.5% from 25 to 44, 22.0% from 45 to 64, and 13.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 89.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.5 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $36,924, and the median income for a family is $44,873. Males have a median income of $33,215 versus $24,173 for females. The per capita income for the city is $19,592. 15.0% of the population and 11.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 21.2% of those under the and 12.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
Transportation
Amtrak's Crescent train connects Gastonia with the cities of New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, Charlotte, Atlanta, Birmingham and New Orleans. The Amtrak station is situated at 350 Hancock Street.
Gastonia is known as a quilting center.
