Dare County is a county located in the state of North Carolina. As of 2000, the population is 29,967. Its county seat is Manteo6.

Law and government

Dare County is a member of the Albemarle Commission regional council of governments.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 4,044 km² (1,562 mi²). 993 km² (384 mi²) of it is land and 3,051 km² (1,178 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 75.44% water.

Dare County includes the northern half of the Outer Banks.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 29,967 people, 12,690 households, and 8,451 families residing in the county. The population density is 30/km² (78/mi²). There are 26,671 housing units at an average density of 27/km² (70/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 94.75% White, 2.66% Black or African American, 0.28% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.90% from other races, and 1.00% from two or more races. 2.22% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 12,690 households out of which 27.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.00% are married couples living together, 8.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.40% are non-families. 25.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.34 and the average family size is 2.79.

In the county the population is spread out with 21.40% under the age of 18, 6.30% from 18 to 24, 30.80% from 25 to 44, 27.70% from 45 to 64, and 13.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 101.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 100.20 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $42,411, and the median income for a family is $49,302. Males have a median income of $31,240 versus $24,318 for females. The per capita income for the county is $23,614. 8.00% of the population and 5.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 9.90% of those under the age of 18 and 5.30% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
