Franklin County is a county located in the state of North Carolina. As of 2000, the population is 47,260. Its county seat is Louisburg6.

History

The county was formed in 1779 from the southern half of Bute County. It was named for Benjamin Franklin.

In 1881, parts of Franklin County, Granville County, and Warren County were combined to form Vance County.

Law and government

Franklin County is a member of the Kerr-Tar Regional Council of Governments.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,281 km² (495 mi²). 1,274 km² (492 mi²) of it is land and 7 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.52% water.

The county is divided into ten townships: Cedar Rock, Cypress Creek, Dunn, Franklinton, Gold Mine, Harris, Hayesville, Louisburg, Sandy Creek, and Youngsville.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 47,260 people, 17,843 households, and 12,882 families residing in the county. The population density is 37/km² (96/mi²). There are 20,364 housing units at an average density of 16/km² (41/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 66.00% White, 30.03% Black or African American, 0.44% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 2.29% from other races, and 0.91% from two or more races. 4.44% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 17,843 households out of which 33.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.50% are married couples living together, 13.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.80% are non-families. 23.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.58 and the average family size is 3.03.

In the county the population is spread out with 25.30% under the age of 18, 8.40% from 18 to 24, 32.40% from 25 to 44, 22.90% from 45 to 64, and 11.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 97.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.40 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $38,968, and the median income for a family is $44,540. Males have a median income of $31,543 versus $24,568 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,562. 12.60% of the population and 10.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 16.10% of those under the age of 18 and 16.70% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
