Caswell County is a county located in the state of North Carolina. As of 2000, the population is 23,501. Its county seat is Yanceyville6.

History
The county was formed in 1777 from Orange County. It was named for Richard Caswell, Governor of North Carolina from 1776 to 1780.
In 1791 the eastern half of Caswell County became Person County.

Caswell County is a member of the regional Piedmont Triad Council of Governments.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,110 km² (428 mi²). 1,100 km² (425 mi²) of it is land and 10 km² (4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.88% water.

The county is divided into nine townships: Anderson, Dan River, Hightowers, Leasburg, Locust Hill, Milton, Pelham, Stoney Creek, and Yanceyville.

Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 23,501 people, 8,670 households, and 6,398 families residing in the county. The population density is 21/km² (55/mi²). There are 9,601 housing units at an average density of 9/km² (23/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 61.07% White, 36.52% Black or African American, 0.19% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.17% from other races, and 0.86% from two or more races. 1.77% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 8,670 households out of which 31.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.20% are married couples living together, 14.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.20% are non-families. 23.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.56 and the average family size is 3.01.
In the county the population is spread out with 23.20% under the age of 18, 7.70% from 18 to 24, 30.10% from 25 to 44, 26.00% from 45 to 64, and 13.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 102.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 102.30 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $35,018, and the median income for a family is $41,905. Males have a median income of $28,968 versus $22,339 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,470. 14.40% of the population and 10.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 18.30% of those under the age of 18 and 21.10% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
