Airway Heights is a city located in Spokane County, Washington. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 4,500.

Airway Heights was officially incorporated on June 28, 1955.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 12.6 km² (4.9 mi²). 12.6 km² (4.9 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 4,500 people, 958 households, and 656 families residing in the city. The population density is 356.0/km² (923.0/mi²). There are 1,095 housing units at an average density of 86.6/km² (224.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 79.44% White, 10.47% African American, 3.20% Native American, 1.84% Asian, 0.38% Pacific Islander, 1.56% from other races, and 3.11% from two or more races. 9.93% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 958 households out of which 40.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.7% are married couples living together, 18.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.5% are non-families. 25.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 3.02.

In the city the population is spread out with 16.9% under the age of 18, 11.6% from 18 to 24, 46.8% from 25 to 44, 20.3% from 45 to 64, and 4.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 263.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 325.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $29,829, and the median income for a family is $31,344. Males have a median income of $26,117 versus $22,031 for females. The per capita income for the city is $11,069. 22.0% of the population and 14.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 21.0% of those under the age of 18 and 3.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
