Montgomery is a town located in Orange County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 20,891.
The Town of Montgomery is in the northern part of the county and contains three villages, one also called Montgomery, as well as Walden and most of Maybrook.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 132.3 km² (51.1 mi²). 130.6 km² (50.4 mi²) of it is land and 1.7 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.25% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 20,891 people, 7,273 households, and 5,447 families residing in the town. The population density is 159.9/km² (414.2/mi²). There are 7,643 housing units at an average density of 58.5/km² (151.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 91.28% White, 3.69% Black or African American, 0.25% Native American, 0.68% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 2.35% from other races, and 1.73% from two or more races. 7.75% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 7,273 households out of which 40.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.3% are married couples living together, 11.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.1% are non-families. 20.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.84 and the average family size is 3.28.
In the town the population is spread out with 29.3% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 31.1% from 25 to 44, 21.9% from 45 to 64, and 10.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 95.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.6 males.
